Many families have action plans for fires or inclement weather.  Few families have action plans for emotional distress.  Our hope is that each person who visits us will print out this contract or share it online with others.

If our family would have had a plan in place like this, it may have given my sister a chance to survive her crises. Learn about this important topic of identifying emotional crisis here:

https://power2u.org/responding-to-emotional-crisis/

Discuss how a crisis is created by an event which temporarily overwhelms our coping resources.  The purpose of the contract is to be with the person in crisis until they can be brought to a professional for help.

Please contact your loved ones and fill in the blanks so you have a solid plan in place in case someone is in emotional distress.

If someone in our family is in crisis, are you willing to drop everything to be with them?

Who can act in the interim before the family member arrives? (This can be a trusted friend, neighbor, co-worker or call the police department to do a welfare check. Each person on your list should have one extra contact person in close proximity who can get to them quickly) Find these people and write their names here. List which family member they are in close proximity to. Include phone numbers.

  1. Our family promises to ask our loved one directly if they are thinking about suicide and, if so, by what means have they considered taking their own life?

  2. We will avoid debating the value of life, minimizing their problems or giving advice,        and focus on getting professional help.

If a person says they are considering suicide we will: (Modified from the AFSP Home page)

  • Take the person seriously and call our helpers

  • Stay with them and help them remove lethal means

  • Call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline1-800-273-8255

  • Text TALK to 741741 to text with a trained crisis counselor from the Crisis Text Line for free, 24/7

  • Escort them to mental health services or an emergency room.

My signature is my promise to act upon these things if I, or a loved one, seems to be in crisis.
